Who da heck is Persephone??
Tonight I'm going to explain in detail where the heck the last post came from.
This is what happens when my brain goes all the way out there. All the way to a place where stream of consciousness and poetry and images and words all mash together into something pretty weird. That was where the last post came from, and here is what it all means.
First, the musical choice. It was "Can't Find the Real World" by Queensryche. The significance of that was that was it was from a movie where the main character loses his son senselessly. (The whole movie was pretty senseless anyways, but the song kicks butt, and the theme fit)
Why the post? The entire post was written as a way for me try and say goodbyes and come to terms with a number of senseless losses that I've observed; some recent, and some really really old.
Persephone!?!? Greek myth reference. A daughter of Demeter who was abducted by the king of the underworld. While she was gone the world was left barren, cold, and empty. Seemed to be the right muse to pick for this.
What's up with all references to fire? Remember the song "This little light of mine"? As a child I thought the light was a reference to life, not to religion. Later I learned my mistake, and still later I discovered that it really means both. The imagery really works for in a number of different ways, and once I started writing it that way, the rest of the references to fire and light just seemed to really fit what I was trying to express. Don't like it? Write your OWN blog! :)
Why do you change voices from the singular to the plural so often? I had 3 specific losses in mind when I wrote this, and sometimes I felt I was speaking to all of them, and sometimes I felt like I wasn't just speaking for myself, but for a number of us who missed their presence. Sometimes I take a lot of liberty with the language when I can't find a better way to express myself. Just be glad I didn't make up any new words (like 'ginormous' or 'sneezehanger').
Last question, who are the 3 losses you had in mind while writing this? Vanessa, Joshua Gene, and Natani. That's about as far as I'm willing to go on that subject at the moment. If you REALLY want to know more, ask me again in about a year. I may be more willing to spill then.

I didn't get into the whole story, but you're exactly right. Persephone was rescued, but ate 6 pomegranates (or took 6 bites of one, depends on which version of the story), so Zues decided she would spend 6 months of the year with her mother, and 6 months of the year in the underworld. While she was with her mother, the world knew spring and summer. When she was in the underworld, the world grew cold and barren.
I'm impressed! I thought my wife and I were the only ones who would get our obscure greek myth references. I call her 'Cassandra' all the time, not because it is her name, but because no-one ever listens to her. We also joke about making 'Medea soup' when the kids get on our nerves.
