The world according to Hawk

Well, I WAS going to have an entry all about sex. But I can't really address that without going through my explanation of how people work (or at least, how I think perceive how people work in my own, humble, and egotistical opinion).

Now, to do this I'll start by explaining that for time immemorial (whatever THAT word means), philosophers have stated that people are made up of 3 parts, the mind, the body, and the spirit. These days, you don't hear about that very often, but every once in a while you'll hear about someone being strong in mind, body and spirit (those LiveStrong bracelets for example). I feel the same way about it, with the only exception that I feel their order should be rearranged. The mind should really be considered the lynch-pin around which the soul and the body revolve, because that is where all people get to make their own decisions on where to go in life.

Hmmm, I can already tell from re-reading this that this won't make a lot of sense without some sort of illustration. My mother wrote up a nice one about 20 years ago in my Bible when she explained this concept to me. I've revised my opinions of it a bit since then, but her handwriting and penmanship will always be more legible than mine, so let me see if I can go find it. . . . .

Aha, here we go. It may be helpful to right click on this image, then select 'open in new window', so that you can refer back to it from time to time as I go through the 3 parts and how they relate.

Ok, on the left in the yellow you find the spirit, in the middle purple the mind, and on the right in red the body. (pay no attention to the word 'soul' right in the middle of the mind section, I've always imagined it to be on the left, but this is my mother's hand writing, not mine) Ok, now on the left within the spirit reside the SOUL, the super-ego, the subconscious. This is where our dreams originate from, our spiritual sides, our instinct and those feelings that defy explanation but seem to often be right!

In the middle, lies the mind, our ego, our emotions and our will. This is, for all intents and purposes, the part that makes us tick. This is where we live when we are awake. Where we make our decisions, where we process our daily input, where we decide what is wrong and right and what we are going to do about it.

And in the right corner, weighing in at about a bazillion pounds these days, lies the body, the flesh, our 5 senses, our ID, and the place where (in my opinion) 6 of the 7 deadly sins originate. This is pretty much everything we can measure and observe in the world around us. However, there are some exceptions to this one, but I'll get to that later.

Ok, so this is the 3 parts that make up every single person on the planet (again, in my humble opinion). What makes this interesting is that everyone can and will get input from both the left and the right. From the left you get input when you dream, when you pray, when you meditate, and sometimes when you least expect it. Just beyond that yellow circle on the left is the 'spirit world' for lack of a better word. This is the place that our Native American ancestors would commune with the Great Spirit at (after ingesting some of the good stuff of course, sometimes I feel the same after a bowl of spicy chili). But just as we interact with the 'real world' on the far right side with our 5 senses of our bodies, we interact with the 'spirit world' on the far left side with our unconscious and introspective sides.

To the Greeks, both sides of the spectrum were just as real and important, and they would refer to the 'perfect' world on the left and the 'imperfect world' on the right as mirror images of each other. The Bible also makes reference to this the book of Matthew, chapter 16 verse 19.

And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

And again in chapter 18 verse 18

Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

So, now we get to consider ourselves in our minds to be the center of the universe!!!! And we're right (kinda)!! In a very real sense, we really are at the very center of our own universe. But only at the center of our own worlds. Each and every person is at the center of their own world, and in each of those worlds there is input coming from both sides, the spirit world and the physical world. How do you like THEM apples? This is part of the reason why I like to think that every person we meet is a blessing, and a window into a whole new world.

Naturally, this leads to some conflict. Some 'spiritual warfare' so to speak. If we are all getting input from 2 sides, which side do we choose (in our minds) to heed? Hmmmm? Do we listen to the input from our divine souls, which, while flawed by our human frailties, was designed by an almighty and perfect creator who loves us, or . . . not. Do we listen to the 'god of THIS world', who's designs pretty clearly evil in that they only serve themselves.

Which brings up another point. Neither side is wholly on the left or the right. Both have been known to cross over from time to time. Jesus made it abundantly clear that he can be God in the flesh, the advesary was created as a spiritual being, but only gained dominion in the physical realm when Adam handed it over on a silver platter (ok, this is a gross oversimplification of some pretty abstract spiritual concepts, but that's all I can give right now with both sons still awake while I'm trying to type all this out). This the reason that nearly all of the worlds major religions seem to agree on major principles. As the alien so eloquently put it in the move Enemy Mine, "Truth is truth!".

Which brings up yet ANOTHER point (I know, but this is how spiritual theology works, it brings up more questions than it can answer. Come to think of it, science does the same thing. Hmm, what does THAT tell ya?). If someone is trying to tie in to the left side of that spectrum, but NOT to a benevolent spirit (The Lord, the Great Spirit, Yaweh, Allah, nirvana, whatever), just what is it that person is going to dial-up? How do spiritualists, mediums, ouiji boards and stuff work? Hmmm? (I'd just like to note that on 2 occations I can vividly recall from high-school, ouiji boards stopped working the second I walked into the room. Heh, I find that amusing).

Which brings up another point, what SHOULD you do if you find yourself at the front lines of a spiritual war? Well, the obvious answer would be to pray (make contact with YOUR spiritual side for some battle instructions). The adversary hates to be quoted scripture, and hates to be laughed at. If you can quote some really funny scripture, you should be well off (reciting Elijah's testing of the priests of Ba'al always works for me). Also, if you think you've made contact with something, but you're not sure which side it's on, just ask it how it feels about Jesus. How about some biblical verses to back that up shall we? The 1st chapter of John is great reading for this spiritual world vs. physical world discussion, but here are my favorite 2 verses.

1 John 4:1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

1 John 4:4
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Ok, so I started out giving an account of what I think make people tick, and I ended up giving a dissertation on spiritual warfare. Guess what, it's all related, and I'm ok with that. I guess NEXT time I sit down here I'll try to get at where I feel sex fits in with this whole thing (it does play a part, but not as large a part people may think) (yes, and I did say 'sex' and 'large part' in the same sentence on purpose, ha-ha!)
