Joshua gets to spend the night in the hospital

He's dehydrated from pooping for 3 days and then barfing for 2 more days (sorry for the graphic words, but we're a little tired). He'll be fine, but needs and IV, some tests, and some monitoring to see if we can find a way to stop the nausea. Everytime he eat or drinks anything for the last 2 days, it comes back up within 1-4 hours. Since this came right after diarrhea of 3 days, the poor boy didn't have much left in the tank. So when he went to the doctor today, they weren't able to put in an IV in either arm, and admitted him to the hospital tonight.

The house is in quite a shape now, as Marcus and I were sick too (only for about 24 hours each though, and we got better). The only reason I have time to sit down and type this out, is because I literally can't go to bed. Both sets of linen for our bed are in the dryer right now, as both were barfed on today. So were both sets of Joshua's linen, and Marcus' sets have been through the laundry 3 times in the past 3 days. Yes, we've gone though more water in a winter month than we go through in a summer month (which is pretty odd here in Arizona).

Fortunately, the boys have taken this wave with some uncharacteristic fortitude. They're usually really big babies when they get sick (ok, they're 6 and 2, so they're allowed to). But this time they would cough a bit, throw up, and hardly cry at all. The little one wanted to be hugged and held a lot, but he wants that a lot anyways, so that's not really new. It made things a lot easier on Brandi and I, which is nice, because we've been pretty exhausted trying to keep up with everything. I can't imagine how much worse we would feel if the boys really expressed how crappy they were feeling.

We almost didn't admit Joshua also, since we don't like to be 'overprotective' and none of us have ever been sick enough to be admitted before. But I really think it was a good idea now. The boy just couldn't keep anything down. Even after we went in and settled into the room, he drank about 20ml of water, and less than 2 hours later it all came back up. And this was WITH an IV to help hydrate him. Blah. Poor little guy. He'll feel better tomorrow, and perhaps with some lab results we can isolate what's making him so queasy and hopefully alleviate it. It is always difficult to watch your child suffer through illness or injury. We comfort them as much as we can, and pray, and distract, and cuddle, but there's really very little we can actually DO to help them. I'd like to think that my presence and encouragement are helping, but he can't really tell me so. The nurse offered to take Joshua away and put the IV in without me in the room, but I thought that was just silly, and I hoped that my being there would help re-assure him. He screamed the whole way through anyways, and he'll never be able to tell me if I helped or not, but I'd like to think that it would have been worse for him if he didn't know anyone in the room.

Now I'm just venting stream of consciousness thoughts out on screen because I don't feel like I'm in a good enough frame of mind to log onto work and get through some e-mails. But too bad! It' s my blog, and that's what it here for :).

If you don't like it, write you own! (which some of you have already done, awesome!)

Ok, I'm going to go check and see if my sheets are dry enough to sleep on now.

Sorry the family is sick, and sorry for the little one, but ya gotta remember he's got some of the best babysitters while he's being rehydrated :)

Nothing illness wise here, but we finally did get local medical insurance, so no more urgent care. Maybe we won't need it now..

He gets to spend another night now, but just to make sure the stuff he's eating comes out where it's supposed to.

I'm happy to hear your insurance has come through Shulz, and I hope you never have to use it either!

Thanks for support ME. The wife was the only one who didn't get sick, which meant she had to work 3 times as hard as usual (which sucks, 'cus she already works crazy hard!).

Moms always work hard, especially when babies are sick.

Here's to wellness!
